GRIEF & LOSS

Grief & Loss Counseling for Children and Teens

Stephanie Legendre, LPC-S, Registered Play Therapist

Unfortunately we cannot protect our children from loss, but play therapy and other nonthreatening games can help children process and work through these difficult times.   Parents will also be taught ways to soothe their child, increase resiliency, and answer difficult questions that may arise from grief or loss.

Nurturing Hearts: Supporting Children Through Grief and Loss

Welcome to Stephanie’s Grief and Loss Support page, a compassionate space dedicated to understanding and assisting children navigating the complex emotions of grief. Coping with loss at a young age can be challenging, and Stephanie is here to provide guidance, support, and a nurturing environment for healing.

Understanding Grief in Children: Children, like adults, experience grief and loss in various forms—whether it’s the death of a loved one, a divorce, or significant life changes. Their emotions may manifest differently, and it’s crucial to recognize and address their unique needs during these difficult times.

How I Can Help:

  1. Child-Centered Grief Counseling:
    • Stephanie is an experienced counselor specializing in child-centered approaches to grief counseling.
    • Tailored sessions provide a safe and age-appropriate space for children to express their emotions and explore coping strategies.
  2. Play Therapy:
    • Utilizing play therapy as a means of expression, we allow children to communicate their feelings through creative and interactive activities.
    • Play therapy offers a non-verbal outlet for grief, helping children process emotions in a natural and supportive way.
  3. Parental Guidance and Support:
    • Stephanie offers guidance to parents on supporting their grieving children.
    • Provide resources and strategies to foster open communication and understanding within the family.
  4. Education on Grief:
    • Informative sessions to help children understand the concept of grief and loss in age-appropriate language.
    • Address common misconceptions and offer guidance on healthy ways to cope.
  5. Art and Expressive Therapies:
    • Incorporating art and expressive therapies to encourage creative expression and provide additional outlets for emotional release.
    • These therapies empower children to process grief through visual and tactile means.

Coping Strategies for Children:

  1. Memory-Making Activities:
    • Facilitate activities that allow children to create tangible memories and keepsakes in honor of their lost loved one.
  2. Journaling and Storytelling:
    • Encourage children to express their feelings through journaling or storytelling, promoting emotional expression and reflection.
  3. Rituals and Ceremonies:
    • Create age-appropriate rituals or ceremonies to commemorate the life of the person or the significant change, fostering a sense of closure.

Supporting Each Unique Journey: I understand that each child’s journey through grief is unique. My approach is rooted in empathy, respect, and a commitment to providing a supportive environment for healing.
