Self-Esteem Counseling for Children & Teens
Stephanie Legendre, LPC-S, Registered Play Therapist
Children’s self-esteem is built in increments and parents usually attempt to build their child’s self-esteem by external praise: “Good…awesome…you’re the best” etc. In therapy it’s important to teach parents how to help build their self-esteem by using internal praise and encouraging their effort. This helps children gain a sense of self that does not depend on what others think of them but what they believe in themselves.
In counseling, parents and children are taught ways to increase empowerment, change negative thought patterns, and increase independent behaviors. A child’s positive sense of self can create resiliency, and though we cannot prevent our children from experiencing stress, their resiliency can help them be able to overcome it.
